VOICES of DIVERSITY

Empowering Minorities Through Podcasts and Journalism in Northern Iraq

In the conflict-affected region of Northern Iraq, the “Radio Journalists for Reconstruction” project trains 40 individuals from ethnic and religious minority communities—at least half of them women—to become podcasters and radio journalists. Over six months, participants learn essential skills like audio recording, editing, storytelling, and ethical journalism. They also gain practical experience by producing and promoting their own podcasts on locally relevant topics.

Podcasts are a powerful tool for change: accessible, cost-effective, and deeply personal, they give marginalized voices a platform to share stories, explore complex issues, and reach diverse audiences. Through this initiative, at least five podcast series aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals will be launched, fostering intercultural dialogue, community cohesion, and gender equality.

By empowering these voices and strengthening independent media, the project promotes reliable information, mutual understanding, and social cohesion.
